Quality Assurance & Laboratory
The biggest risk when buying essential oils is adulteration: an expensive oil mixed with a cheaper oil, a synthetic chemical or a carrier. You often cannot tell by smell, and you cannot tell by price. Our quality programme exists to take that risk out of your supply chain.
In short
- Every batch is tested before it is packed and dispatched.
- Basic checks are done by our own quality team. Detailed analysis such as GC-MS is done at independent laboratories.
- Every order comes with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis (CoA).
- Our quality system is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and we follow GMP.
- If a batch does not meet its specification, it is not sold.
Two levels of testing
In-house checks on every batch. Our quality team checks each batch for:
- Appearance, colour and clarity.
- Odour, compared against an approved reference sample.
- Specific gravity (density).
- Refractive index.
- Optical rotation, where it applies.
- Solubility and moisture, where they apply.
These quick, reliable tests catch most problems, such as dilution or the wrong material, before a batch goes further.
Independent laboratory analysis. Essential oils are analysed by GC or GC-MS (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) at independent laboratories. GC-MS separates an oil into its individual compounds and measures each one. A genuine oil has a natural "fingerprint" of compounds, and an adulterated oil does not match it.
For example, in peppermint oil we check that menthol and menthone are within the natural range for the plant. Added synthetic menthol shows up as a ratio no real plant produces.
Extra tests for food and pharmaceutical grades
For food, flavour, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical uses, additional tests can be carried out at accredited laboratories when your application needs them:
- Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury).
- Pesticide residues.
- Microbiological tests.
- Residual solvents, for solvent-extracted products.
Tell us your application when you ask for a quote, and we will confirm which tests and documents come with your order.
Documents you receive
- Certificate of Analysis (CoA): with every order, showing the actual test results for your batch against the specification.
- Technical Data Sheet (TDS): product specification and typical values.
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS): safe handling, storage, hazard and transport information.
- GC-MS report: on request for essential oils.
- Declarations: allergen, IFRA, non-GMO and other statements, where available for the product.
Many of these documents can be downloaded from our Downloads page. Anything else is available on request.
Consistency from batch to batch
Natural oils change a little with each harvest. That is normal. We publish a specification range for each product and only release batches that fall inside it. If you need a tighter range for your formulation, tell us and we will quote against your specification.
Retained samples
We keep a sample of each batch we dispatch. If you have a question about your material months later, we can check it against the same batch you received.
Our quality system
IndoOils follows a quality management system certified to ISO 9001:2015, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). This covers how we choose suppliers, check incoming material, test and release batches, handle complaints and fix problems so they do not happen again. See our Certifications.
If something is not right
If you believe a batch does not match its CoA or specification, tell us within 30 days of delivery with the batch number. We will investigate, test it again and, if the claim is confirmed, replace or refund it. See our Refund Policy.
Test before you buy
Ask for a free evaluation sample with its CoA and test it in your own lab. Request a sample or email sales@indooils.com.
