Description

Cardamom Essential Oil is steam distilled from the crushed seeds of green cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), the "Queen of Spices". The plant is native to the evergreen forests of India's Western Ghats, and Kerala's Idukki hills remain the heart of Indian production. India is one of the world's leading cardamom producers, and graded lots are traded through the Spices Board's e-auctions, which gives a documented supply chain.

The oil is clear and colourless to pale yellow, with a sweet, warm-spicy body and a fresh, slightly camphoraceous lift. Its character comes from two constituents: α-terpinyl acetate, the sweet floral-spicy heart, and 1,8-cineole, the fresh top note. Every lot is GC-MS tested, and the balance of these two is the first thing to check on the Certificate of Analysis.

Cardamom is sold in three working forms. This essential oil is the clear, bright choice for fine fragrance, personal care and clear beverages. For a rounder "fresh pod" flavour in tea, coffee and dairy, see our Cardamom CO₂ Spice Oil. For full spice body in seasonings and sweets, see our Cardamom Oleoresin. Our cardamom oil buyer's guide on the IndoOils blog compares all three.

Supplied in 20 kg and 50 kg aluminium packs, minimum order one pack, with CoA, SDS and allergen declaration. Request a sample for lab approval, or send a bulk inquiry for a quotation.

Key Benefits

- Authentic cardamom character: a sweet, warm-spicy body with a fresh lift, true to freshly cracked green pods

- Clear, colourless to pale-yellow oil that will not tint clear drinks, alcohol-based perfumes or white bases

- Concentrated and consistent: a small dose gives the same flavour or fragrance batch after batch, unlike ground spice

- Indian origin, from the plant's native home, with a documented auction-to-distillery supply chain

- Every lot GC-MS tested, with CoA, SDS and allergen declaration supplied

- Listed as generally recognised as safe for food use in the US (21 CFR 182.20); food-grade documentation on request

Industrial Applications

- Food and beverage: chai and coffee premixes, ready-to-drink tea and coffee, dairy desserts, ice cream, bakery, confectionery and Indian sweets

- Spirits and drinks: gin botanicals, liqueurs, bitters and cola-type flavours

- Fine fragrance: spicy top and heart note in colognes, oriental and amber accords, and gourmand perfumes

- Personal care: soaps, shower gels, shaving products and body care

- Oral care: toothpaste, mouthwash and breath-freshening products, usually with mint

- Home fragrance: candles, reed diffusers and room sprays, especially festive and autumn ranges

How to Use

- Flavour: dose by weight on the finished product and start low in bench trials. Pre-dissolve in ethanol, propylene glycol or a flavour carrier before adding to water-based products

- Fine fragrance: use as a top-to-heart accent in citrus colognes, oriental and amber accords, and gourmand perfumes

- Cosmetics and soaps: always dilute, follow IFRA guidance for the product category, and declare EU fragrance allergens above the labelling thresholds

- Set your own acceptance specification from an approved sample and its CoA before ordering in bulk

Blends Well With

Cinnamon bark, clove bud, ginger, black pepper, nutmeg, coriander seed, sweet orange, bergamot, rose, sandalwood, vetiver and cedarwood

Storage & Handling

Store in the original tightly closed aluminium container at 15–25 °C, in a dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. After opening, keep headspace to a minimum or blanket with nitrogen, as air exposure dulls the sweet ester notes. Shelf life 36 months unopened; use opened packs within 12 months.

Safety Information

For manufacturing and professional formulation use only. Do not apply undiluted to the skin, and avoid contact with eyes. May cause skin irritation or an allergic skin reaction in sensitive people. Contains naturally occurring linalool, limonene and geraniol, which are listed fragrance allergens in the EU. Keep out of reach of children. Combustible: keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. See the Safety Data Sheet supplied with each lot for full hazard classification and handling.
