Bulk sweet basil essential oil (Ocimum basilicum) from India — steam distilled, 20 kg and 50 kg packs

India has grown basil for thousands of years — as a kitchen herb, a temple plant, and a source of essential oil traded across Asia and the Middle East. Today it is one of the world's significant producers of basil oil, with steam distillation facilities in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra supplying pharmaceutical, fragrance, food, and personal-care customers worldwide.

Two species dominate the Indian export basket: sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) and holy basil / tulsi (Ocimum sanctum, also written O. tenuiflorum). They share the same CAS number but are botanically distinct, smell different, and attract different formulation teams. A third product — a basil sweet diffuser oil — rounds out the range for aroma and home-fragrance buyers.

This guide walks through all three listings from IndoOils' essential oils range, the chemistry behind them, common applications, quality expectations, and how to place a bulk order.

Sweet Basil (India): The Fragrance Workhorse

IndoOils' Sweet Basil (India) is the species most Western fragrance and food buyers mean when they say "basil oil." The Indian type is steam-distilled from fresh or slightly dried leaves and flowering tops. It is rich in linalool (often 40–60 %), methyl chavicol (estragole), and eugenol — the combination that gives it a warm, green, slightly sweet-spicy character.

Where it goes

  • Fine fragrance and perfumery — a classic top/middle note, adds herbal lift to chypres, fougères, and fresh-aromatic compositions; blends particularly well with bergamot, clove bud, and sandalwood
  • Flavour and food manufacturing — approved for use in bakery, confectionery, savoury seasonings, sauces, and beverages; pairs with tomato, cheese, and Mediterranean flavour profiles
  • Cosmetics and personal care — used in soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and body-care formulations; private-label personal-care brands use it as a clean herbal fragrance note
  • Aromatherapy — diffused or blended with carrier oils for stress-relief and mental-clarity applications

Holy Basil (Tulsi) Oil: The Ayurvedic Variant

Holy basil tulsi essential oil from India — Ocimum sanctum, steam distilled, used in Ayurvedic and wellness formulations

IndoOils' Basil Essential Oil (Holy) — Ocimum sanctum (synonym O. tenuiflorum) — is the tulsi of Indian households and Ayurvedic practice. It is a different plant from sweet basil: the leaves are smaller, often purple-tinged, and the oil has a sharper, more clove-like, camphorous character because of its higher eugenol content and the presence of β-caryophyllene and methyl eugenol.

Buyers often ask whether the two oils are interchangeable. For fragrance or flavour applications that require the classic linalool-forward basil note, they are not — the odour profiles diverge clearly. For wellness, Ayurveda, and herbal formulations, holy basil is often the preferred choice because of its traditional context and its richer eugenol character.

Where it goes

  • Ayurvedic and herbal formulations — part of traditional preparations for respiratory, digestive, and skin-care products
  • Aromatherapy and massage blends — blends well with clove bud, black pepper, sandalwood, and vetiver
  • Natural cosmetics — added to face washes, serums, and anti-ageing creams where a warm, spicy herbal note is wanted
  • Perfumery — adds depth as a base-modifier; works especially well in oriental and spice-forward compositions alongside jasmine sambac or ylang ylang

Basil Sweet Diffuser Oil: Ready for Aroma Applications

Basil sweet diffuser oil — pale yellow liquid, warm anise-like scent, formulated for ultrasonic and reed diffusers

Alongside the two neat essential oils, IndoOils supplies a Basil Sweet Diffuser Oil formulated specifically for ultrasonic and reed diffusers. It appears as a pale yellow liquid with a warm, sweet, spicy, herbal anise-like scent and a longer shelf life (48 months) than the straight distillate, thanks to its formulation.

This listing targets buyers who want basil fragrance without the complexity of blending from scratch — aroma brands, home-fragrance houses, spa-product manufacturers, and private-label diffuser-blend producers.

Where it goes

  • Ultrasonic and reed diffusers — formulated for diffuser hardware compatibility
  • Room sprays and linen mists — blends into alcohol-based and water-based fragrance products
  • Cosmetic and personal-care fragrance — suitable at typical usage rates for rinse-off and leave-on products; see our fragrance allergen labelling guide for EU documentation requirements
  • Home-care products — floor cleaners, surface sprays, and laundry-care items that use herbal or fresh-green fragrance cues

Quality and CoA Expectations

All three products are steam-distilled in India to food-grade and cosmetic-grade standards. IndoOils' quality assurance process covers GC-MS testing, sensory evaluation, and batch traceability — full details are on the traceability page. When placing a bulk order, request the following documents before payment:

  • Certificate of Analysis (CoA) — GC-MS breakdown confirming linalool, methyl chavicol, eugenol, and β-caryophyllene percentages; specific gravity; refractive index; optical rotation
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS / MSDS) — required for import into the EU, US, and most other markets; see fragrance allergen labelling for EU cosmetic compliance
  • Country of origin declaration — for customs clearance and product labelling
  • FSSAI or equivalent food-grade certification if using in food or flavour applications
  • ISO 9001 manufacturing certificate — confirms quality management at the distillery level

Standard documentation templates are available on the downloads page. For Ayurvedic or wellness end-uses, ask whether the holy basil oil is harvested from a particular chemotype (CT eugenol vs CT methyl eugenol), as this affects both odour and regulatory status in some markets.

Storage and Handling

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight — ideally 15–25 °C
  • Keep containers tightly sealed; basil oil oxidises on prolonged exposure to air
  • Aluminium packaging (as supplied) is recommended; avoid plastic or galvanised steel
  • Once opened, use within 12 months for optimal odour and chemical stability
  • Keep away from heat sources and open flame — basil oil is flammable

How to Order

All three basil products ship from India in 20 kg and 50 kg aluminium bottles with a minimum order of 1 pack. Pricing is on request only — quantities, destination, and frequency all affect the final rate.

To request a quotation, send a bulk inquiry or use the enquiry form on the product page. Export documentation (commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate where required) is included as standard for all international shipments.

Samples are available before bulk commitment — request a sample to arrange a dispatch. If you are building a branded range, our private label service covers filling, labelling, and export for all three basil listings.
